USC’s women’s cross country team placed 13th at the Sacramento Capital Cross Challenge/NCAA West Region Preview at Haggin Oaks Golf Club in Sacramento, Calif. today (Oct. 1). Sophomores Sophia Racette and Amber Gore led USC with top 36 finishes in a deep field of runners on the course which will host the West Region Championship on Nov. 11.

“We ran tough against good competition and hopefully we will build upon this experience and it will help lead us into the championship part of the season,” said USC cross country coach David Freeman. “Hopefully by doing another 6K with a deeper field they will have a better understanding of what lies ahead at the Pac-12 Championships. It was a tougher course than what they have faced and they ran well. Hopefully they can use this experience for the Pac-12s and when we come back here for the regional championship.”

Racette made it two-for-two as USC’s top finisher in her first two career cross country meets, leading the Trojans this week with a time of 21:30.5 to place 31st overall. Racette had a time of 21:12.1 to finish 30th on the easier UC Riverside Course on Sept. 17.

Gore was close behind in 36th place with a PR of 21:32.6, making it back-to-back 6K PRs for the Trojans’ surging sophomore.

Redshirt senior Vivian Grimes was next for the Trojans in 88th place with a time of 22:26.6, followed by sophomore Mikaela Smith in 104th with a time of 22:43.0 and redshirt senior Lorea Ibarzabal was 114th with a time of 22:59.3 as the Trojan scorers.

Redshirt junior Rebekah Ent continues to run herself back into shape following a late summer injury and she finished sixth among the Trojans and 119th overall with a time of 23:04.3. Sophomore Lauren Maurer finished 133rd with a time of 23:26.9 and freshman Chloe Berry placed 145th with a time of 23:46.8.

USC will be in action next at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif. on Oct. 15.
