At USC: Christine Cortez begins her second season running cross country at USC after transferring from Mt. SAC...2009: Cortez was a great addition for USC last season and established herself as Troy's second runner behind Zsofia Erdelyi...Her first race for USC was the UC Irvine Invitational on Sept. 12 and she finished fourth among Trojans and 38th overall with a time of 18:51.30...Every other meet she competed in she was USC's second finisher...Had her best 5K result of the season and helped lead USC to victory with a time of 18:19 at the Vanguard Invitational on Oct. 10, good for eighth individually...Posted her best 6K time of the season at the Pac-10 Championships when she ran 21:51.27. Cortez was not able to compete at the NCAA West Regional due to a shin injury.
At Mt. SAC: Cortez attended Mt. SAC from the Fall of 2007-Spring 2009 and ran both cross country and track... She placed second at the 2008 JC State Cross Country Meet with a time of 18:06.91 and was fourth at the 2007 JC State Cross Country Meet with a time of 18:15.05...She was the South Coast Conference (SCC) cross country individual champion both seasons... Both seasons at Mt. SAC she was named SCC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year (2007 & 2008) and SCC Women's Track Athlete of the Year (2008 & 2009)...Had a best time in the 800m race of 2:10.41 at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 17, 2009...Had a season best time of 4:31.68 in the 1500m race at the CSUN Invitational on March 14, 2009...She was the 2008 SCC Champion in the 800m and 1500m, then won both events again in 2009 as well as running a leg on the conference champion 4x400m relay team... Was named Mt. SAC Spring Athlete of the Year in 2009.
High School: Cortez is a 2007 graduate of Diamond Bar (Calif.) High where she ran cross country and track...She broke a 15-year school record in the 800m with a time of 2:21...She was on the Principal Honor Roll as a freshman.
Personal: Christine was born on April 13, 1989 in La Mirada, Calif...Her most thrilling moment in sports was feeling a burst of energy which allowed her to move from fourth to second place right at the end of the College State Meet in Fresno, Calif...Likes to spend her spare time drawing and being with her family and friends...Says Allyson Felix is her biggest sports hero...Chose USC because her mother and several other family members went to USC, sports are appreciated at the school and the Trojan coaches had trained a number of Olympians...Lists her favorite foods as pasta, specifically chicken alfredo and lasagna...Would like to go rock climbing some day to help her overcome her fear of heights...Would like to visit Hawaii...Lists Sandra Bulluck as her favorite actress and Jack Johnson as her favorite musician...Is a Human Performance major at USC and would like to become an assistant coach or personal trainer.
