Oct. 24, 2012
Olympic silver medalist and USC freshman Anni Espar has added another big title to her honor roll, recently selected European Water Polo Player of the Year for her outstanding efforts as a member of the 2012 Spanish Olympic Team.
Just weeks before starting her first classes as a freshman at USC, Espar was earning international acclaim as the second leading scorer in the Olympic Games in London. With Espar leading the way in Spain's first-ever Olympic appearance in women's water polo, Spain made a huge statement in winning the silver medal.
Espar finished the Games with 15 goals, including a big effort in the semifinals with four goals to lift Spain into the gold-medal match. At the end of the Games, Espar was named to the Olympic All-Star Team. Now, Espar has been honored by LEN -- the governing body for European aquatics -- as the women's water polo Player of the Year. Espar received 46.7 percent of the votes to lock in on the award.
