Just months after having combined forces as Trojan teammates to win the 2013 NCAA Championship for USC, Jayde Appel, Hannah Buckling and Anni Espar will have to square off to do battle for top honors this week in Barcelona. A member of host team Spain, Olympic silver medalist Espar goes up against Australia and two Trojan teammates in Appel and Buckling, as the two nations tangle in the gold-medal match of the 2013 FINA World Championships on Friday.

Espar already had to get through one tough fellow Trojan in order to help Spain through to the gold-medal game. In today's semifinal, Espar went up against a fellow Olympian and USC All-American in Hungarian goalie Flora Bolonyai. The MVP of the NCAA Tournament, Bolonyai made a strong stand in goal for Hungary, blocking a 5-meter penalty shot during the match. It was an offensively charged game, though, with the home team Spain getting a swell of support from the crowd -- not to mention four goals scored by Espar -- to get a late surge for a 13-12 Spanish victory.

Spain and Australia are set to battle for gold on Friday (Aug. 2) night in Barcelona. Earlier that afternoon, Hungary takes on Russia in the bronze-medal match. A Hungarian win there would ensure that USC has four Trojan medalists coming home to Troy as Appel, Buckling, Bolonyai and Espar are all due to return for the Women of Troy next season.
