Six Women of Troy Named All-Americans

Monica Vavic is the first USC true freshman since 1999 to get All-America First Team honors.

    June 25, 2012

Led by freshman first-team selection Monica Vavic, the USC has landed six All-Americans on the list for the 2012 season by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches. This year's honor roll also included a pair of newly crowned two-time All-Americans in second-team selection Flora Bolonyai and honorable mention recipient Nadia Dan. The rest of the group have grabbed their first career honors, with sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist on the second team, and sophomore Colleen O'Donnell and junior Dominique Sardo earning honorable mention.

Once again, Monica Vavic matches the freshman-year efforts of Aniko Pelle, who was the last true freshman to be named a first-team All-American and an All-MPSF first-team pick back in 1999. Vavic was USC's second leading scorer in 2012 with 39 goals and was USC's top provider of assists as she worked her way to All-America First Team honors. She also grabbed a spot on the NCAA All-Tournament First Team as the Trojans reached the NCAA title match. Her freshman year list of honors also includes spots on the All-MPSF First Team and All-MPSF Newcomer Team.

Sophomore goalie Flora Bolonyai -- who is bound for London this summer as a member of the Hungarian Olympic Team -- upgraded her freshman year All-American honorable mention status to a place on the All-America Second Team after accumulating 209 saves in her sophomore season as a Trojan. Bolonyai averaged 10.1 saves per game during the MPSF and NCAA tournaments, earning spots on the NCAA All-Tournament Second Team and All-MPSF Second Team. On the year, Bolonyai averaged 8.6 saves and just 5.2 goals-against per game for the Women of Troy.

USC's top scorer in 2012 was sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist, who has landed on the All-America Second Team with Bolonyai. Gilchrist also led the team by scoring in 24 different games on her way to finishing with 47 goals on the year. Gilchrist's sophomore season also saw her haul in All-MPSF Second Team honors.

The trio of Trojans earning 2012 All-America Honorable Mention is led by two-time All-American senior Nadia Dan. The senior captain was fourth on the team in scoring with 25 goals, finishing her USC career with 107 career goals to go along with an NCAA ring as a 2010 National Champion. Junior Dominique Sardo also was a member of that 2010 championship team, and as a junior this season she picks up her first honors as an All-American. Sardo provided 23 goals for the Trojans in 2012, earning All-MPSF Honorable Mention along the way. The fourth member of the first-time All-American group is sophomore Colleen O'Donnell, who has honorable mention in-hand after helping the Trojans along with 24 goals to go with All-MPSF Honorable Mention in her second season of action with the Women of Troy.
