USC's Anae, Craig and Vavic Named to USA's FINA Super Final Roster

Many Women of Troy are capping up for international action!

    May 22, 2013

The U.S. national women's water polo team will be three Trojans strong once again, with Olympians Tumua Anae and Kami Craig joined by recently crowned MPSF Player of the Year Monica Vavic on the roster for Team USA's trip to China for the 2013 FINA World League Super Final.

This is Monica Vavic's first call-up to the senior national team for international action, but she's in good company with the likes of USC grads Tumua Anae and Kami Craig. Anae and Craig were teammates on USC's 2010 NCAA Championship team, while Vavic is coming off a key role in leading the 2013 Women of Troy to the national championship just weeks ago. All three are decorated Trojans in their own rights, though they shine in different positions. Goalie Anae and two-meter player Craig return to the USA roster as 2012 Olympic gold medalists. Driver Vavic was USC's top scorer in 2013 and last competed for the USA at the 2008 Junior Pan-American Games. All three Women of Troy have been finalists for the Peter J. Cutino Award -- an honor that Craig won back-to-back and that Vavic is hoping to win this year.

The three Trojans join a powerful USA roster for the 2013 FINA World League Super Finals. Including Anae and Craig, there are eight 2012 Olympians on the team, which also includes some new members of the senior squad from the collegiate level to round out the roster of 15 heading to Beijing, China, for competition June 1-6.

USA Water Polo also named a second senior national team that will compete separately from the first team mentioned above at the FINA World League Prelims, which begin this Friday (May 24) in Los Alamitos, Calif. That second team roster is also three Trojans strong, with fellow 2013 NCAA Champions Kaleigh Gilchrist, Kelly Mendoza and Colleen O'Donnell on the team for action this weekend. At the Prelims, the two U.S. women's teams will compete alongside national teams from Canada and Brazil. Another member of that 2010 NCAA Championship team - Joelle Bekhazi - has been an anchor on the Canadian team, making this weekend's action in Los Alamitos a USC reunion in the water!
