USC to Host Women's Water Polo National Championships|
April 16, 1998
LOS ANGELES -- The best college women's water polo teams in the country will gather at the National Collegiate Championships, hosted by USC, at the McDonald's Swim Stadium on May 8-10.
The 12-team tournament will feature seven teams from the West, two from the Midwest and three from the East. The Midwest Regional will be held April 17-19 at Indiana, while the West Regional (at Stanford) and the East Regional (at Maryland) will both be held April 24-26.
The tournament will start at 7:30 a.m. on Friday (May 8) at Long Beach State, due to a conflict with USC's graduation ceremony. Beginning at 3 p.m. on Friday, all other games will be played at USC. Saturday's games start at 11 a.m. and Sunday's begin at 9 a.m. The championship will be held on Sunday (May 10) at 3 p.m.
Ticket prices are $10 for a day pass and $25 for a three-day pass. Tickets will only be sold at the door.
USC, ranked sixth in the country, placed fifth at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament last weekend. UCLA, the top-ranked team in the country and the 1998 MPSF champion, is the two-time defending national champion.
Because there are not enough Division I and II schools that sponsor women's water polo, it is not yet an NCAA championship event.
