USC Freshman Jayde Appel Named MPSF Newcomer of the Week|
March 11, 2013
USC freshman Jayde Appel had two big goals for the Trojans in an MPSF comeback win over upset-minded No. 3 Arizona State over the weekend. For her clutch efforts in the victory, Appel has picked up her first career honors as the MPSF Newcomer of the Week.
Appel's first goal of the day was a long-range blast that sparked a three-goal surge to pull USC out of an early two-goal deficit to the Sun Devils. Appel would later break a 5-5 tie and spark another Trojan run - this time a four-goal streak to victory - when she put away a close-range rebound. Appel also had several steals in the eventual 11-7 USC win, which keeps the Trojans undefeated at 14-0 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play.
Appel is the second Trojan newcomer to win this award, following fellow Aussie Hannah Buckling's honor on February 25. Appel and the Women of Troy have another home game coming up this week with an MPSF matchup against San Jose State at 5 p.m. on Friday (March 15) at USC's home pool at the site of the future Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
