LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's water polo team has been tabbed the No. 2 team in the nation and the conference as the 2008 season draws near. In preseason polls recently released, the Women of Troy have been picked second in the National Collegiate rankings and the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coaches poll. The rankings represent an improvement for the Trojans, who finished third in the NCAA Tournament and in the MPSF Tournament last season. Selected No. 1 in both polls is defending national and conference champion UCLA.

In the national rankings, USC sits seven points behind the Bruins and four points ahead of No. 3 Stanford - which was the runner-up in the 2007 NCAA and MPSF tournaments. Hawai'i weighs in at No. 4 followed closely by No. 5 California.

The MPSF coaches poll had the same 1-2 selections for UCLA and USC, while Stanford and California came in even at No. 3. Hawai'i received the No. 5 spot in the MPSF preseason poll.

USC is set to open its 2008 campaign in early February with a home opener against Hartwick on February 2 at McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Trojans went 22-6 overall last season and were 10-2 in MPSF action. The Women of Troy also expanded their home win streak to 38 straight games with their fifth consecutive undefeated season at McDonald's Swim Stadium. Leading the Trojans into the 2008 season are a set of four experienced seniors - Veronika Bartunkova, Miranda Nichols, Alison Riddle and Julie Spataru - as well as 2006 All-American goalie Whitney Morgan and 2007 MPSF All-Freshman picks Forel Davies and Alexandra Kiss.
