No. 1 USC Inks 15-5 Win Over Indiana|
March 22, 2014
HONOLULU, HAWAI'I -- The No. 1 USC women's water polo team got stingy on the defense end and held No. 14 Indiana scoreless for 16 minutes of action, posting a 15-5 win over the Hoosiers last night in Honolulu. The top-ranked Trojans spread the wealth among 11 scorers in the win to improve their overall win streak out to 23 in a row and take a 16-0 record on the year.
Stephania Haralabidis led the way with a first-half hat trick for the Trojan cause. That helped balance out Indiana's efforts, which saw the Hoosiers come out hot with three goals in the first frame and then one late in the second. USC would build up a 7-4 lead by halftime as Kelly Mendoza, Madeline Rosenthal and Monica Vavic joined Haralabidis in the scoring column.
But it was USC's defensive stand that won the day for the Women of Troy. Indiana got its fourth goal of the game with 2:39 on the clock in the second period, and the Trojans defense would keep the Hoosiers silent for the next 16 minutes of action. In the meantime, USC accumulated seven more scores. Jennifer Stiefel, Olivia Cummins, Jayde Appel, Kaleigh Gilchrist and Ioanna Haralabidis got on the board while Vavic and Eike Daube tallied their second in constructing a 14-4 advantage. Indiana would finally break the silence with a score at 2:27 in the fourth, only to see USC have the last word on a strike from Mikayla Tyler to wrap things up as a 15-5 USC victory.
The Trojans now turn to a doubleheader day next (March 23), taking on Long Beach State first and then host Hawai'i to end the busy day in Honolulu before heading back to the mainland.
