LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 2 USC women's water polo team kicked off its three-game stretch at McDonald's Swim Stadium with an 11-5 win over No. 16 Long Beach State. Behind goalie Tumua Anae and her 12-save performance, the Women of Troy were able to improve to a 12-1 record.
The Trojans' defensive prowess early led to an efficient offensive attack. In the first period, Kami Craig scored first for USC. It was the first of two goals for Craig. Adding to the lead were Joelle Bekhazi and Michelle Stein. Anae, who recorded 7 saves in the first period alone, connected with Stein on a counterattack pass that put the Trojans up 3-0, but not long after Long Beach State put its first points on the board.
As was the trend, USC had an answer to the 49ers' goal. Just prior to the end of the first period, Rosanna Tomiuk scored to extend the lead to 4-1. The second period saw goals from Nadia Dan and Alexandra Kiss of USC. But Long Beach State matched the Trojan offense, scoring two goals in the period for a score of 6-3 at the half.
The Women of Troy began the third period taking only 15 seconds to score their seventh goal of the contest on Craig's efforts. No more than two minutes later, Tomiuk scored her second goal to make it 8-3 USC. But Long Beach State would prove resilient, scoring goals in both the third and fourth periods to trim the lead to three.
USC scored the final three goals of the contest to put the match out of reach. Stein and Dan scored the first two goals in the fourth period with Kally Lucas scoring the Trojans' final goal to round out an 11-5 win for the Women of Troy.
