No. 2 USC Stays Perfect With Winning Run At Lancer Invite

Senior Blair Moody scored her first career hat trick today vs. Cal Baptist.

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC women's water polo team was in full control once again in keeping its undefeated start to 2013 fully intact with two more powerful wins at the Lancer Invitational. The Women of Troy rolled through two more opponents today, beginning a 22-3 win over host Cal Baptist before a 24-6 win over Concordia. That brings USC's overall record to a clean 8-0.

The Trojans pulled another double day today with a tight turnaround between games. USC opened the day by building a 7-0 lead on the host Lancers in the first period of play. CBU got three goals to go in the first half of play as USC held a 14-3 halftime lead, but the Trojan defense clicked into complete control from there. USC shut out the Lancers for the last 16 minutes of action in rolling out to the 22-3 final decision. For the third straight game of the Invitational, Monica Vavic was USC's top gun. She punched in four goals to lead the Trojans, with Madeline Rosenthal, Hannah Buckling and Blair Moody each rifling hat tricks. That marked a career best for senior Moody, and it was also the first career hat trick as a Trojan for newcomer Buckling.

With just a short break in between games, USC's balanced performance extended into its matchup with Concordia next. The offense was unrelenting as 12 different Women of Troy got to the back of the net. Defensively, Flora Bolonyai manned the cage in the first half and allowed just one 6-on-5 goal to get through as USC rolled up a 13-1 lead by halftime. Hometown hero Sara Salamon would knock in her first two career goals as a Trojan in the win, the first coming at the close of the first frame as the Riverside native lifted USC ahead 7-0.

Olivia Cummins and Monica Vavic led the scoring charge in this one with four goals apiece, joined by Kaleigh Gilchrist's hat trick to power up the surge of 12 scorers for USC in the eventual 24-6 victory.

The Women of Troy now turn for next week's action at the competitive UCI Invitational, running Feb. 23-24 in Irvine, Calif.
