Feb. 15, 2013
RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC women's water polo team drilled out two more decisive wins with today's winning effort at the Lancer Invitational. Monica Vavic had the hottest hand for the Women of Troy on the day, scoring eight goals across the Trojans' two wins -- a 9-1 victory over No. 11 Long Beach State and a 29-4 win over Azusa Pacific. USC improves to 6-0 with the victorious day.
Vavic would gun down five goals in USC's first game of the day, joined by two goals apiece from Kelly Mendoza and Dominique Sardo in the 9-1 win over Long Beach State. Mendoza's first career goal as a Trojan put USC ahead 3-0 in the first frame during a five-goal scoring run by the Trojans. The 49ers would get their lone goal of the game with a 6-on-5 score at 3:13 in the second frame, but the Trojan defense would reign supreme the rest of the way. Goalie Flora Bolonyai hauled in nine saves for USC to wrap up the win.
Minutes later, USC would turn right around for its second game of the day. Up against Azusa Pacific for the first time in program history, the Women of Troy flexed some serious scoring muscle en route to a 29-4 win over the Cougars. Led by four goals from Sardo and hat tricks from Vavic and Chelsea Silvers, USC had 15 different players get to the back of the net in the game. Freshmen Courtney Walters and Emilie Myers each tallied a hat trick in the win and helped to charge up USC to a 10-0 run out of the gates. USC goalies Bolonyai and Alegra Hueso shared time in the cage in combining for eight saves in the win. Bolonyai also blocked a penalty shot in the fourth frame.
USC now turns to play two more games tomorrow (Feb. 16) in a doubleheader at the Lancer Invitational. The Trojans will face host Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. and then plays Concordia at 2:20 p.m.
