Top-Ranked Trojans Post Two More Hefty Wins
Feb. 14, 2014
RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- The No. 1 USC women's water polo team rang up two sizable victories in today's first day of action at the Lancer Invitational. The Trojans went back-back-with big wins in Riverside, first serving up a 26-2 win over Fresno Pacific before turning around and dropping Redlands with a 24-1 decision. Now 6-0 on the year, the defending national champions take on two more teams tomorrow in the action in Riverside.
Win number five of the season for the Women of Troy came in a hefty 26-2 victory over Fresno Pacific, with 13 different Trojans getting in on the scoring to open the Lancer Invitational. Led by junior Monica Vavic's five-goal outing, USC also got four goals apiece from Ioanna Haralabidis and Jennifer Stiefel. Madeline Rosenthal added a hat trick -- all from the second period of play -- and Nikki Stansfield added a two-goal effort in the third. Eight other Trojans provided a goal apiece as USC gathered up the 26-2 win. The Trojans scored the first 12 goals of the game before FPU got on the board with a 5-meter penalty shot late in the second period. USC responded with the next six goals in building an 18-1 lead before wrapping the game on an eight-goal scoring surge.
The Trojans would turn right around and steamroll another opponent immediately following that first matchup. USC ripped off a 16-0 lead on Redlands next, en route to a 24-1 win on the hands of 11 different Trojan scorers. Senior Kaleigh Gilchrist was the leader in this one, tearing up five goals for the Women of Troy, who also got four from Vavic and three apiece from Eike Daube and Stiefel. Freshman Stephania Haralabidis added two, as did Olivia Cummins, and USC was off to the races with another big win under its cap.
Tomorrow, the Trojans will face No. 19 host Cal Baptist at 1:30 p.m. before finishing off another doubleheader day with a 3 p.m. matchup against Azusa Pacific.
