LOS ANGELES - Sofia Konoukh and Katrin Dierolf each recorded hat tricks Saturday as the No. 3 USC Trojans opened their 2002 season with a 10-5 win against No. 8 Loyola Marymount at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Both teams scored twice in the first period before the Women of Troy (1-0) jumped out to a 6-3 halftime lead with four goals in the second period. Freshman goalie Sarah Mix made four saves in the start for the Trojans while Devon Courtney registered five saves for the Lions (0-1).
"We had a lot of morning workouts recently, so we were tired today," said USC Head Coach Jovan Vavic. "It's good to win when you are playing tired. We will try to get some rest this week for our players."
USC return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 6) with a 5 p.m. match at home against Cal Baptist.
