USC defeated New Hampshire and Cal State Northridge in a pair of 3-0 sweeps to advance to its 10th regional semifinal match under head coach Mick Haley. The Trojans have made three appearances in the final four in the last six years and have advanced to the NCAA regional championship match nine times since the tournament field was expanded to 64 teams in 1998. USC has served as host to regional championships twice previously (2000, '01).

The Trojans own a 117-34 all-time postseason record (.775) and are 71-27 (.740) in the NCAA tournament. USC has won six national championships including the first-ever NCAA title awarded in 1981. The Trojans also won back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003. USC is also the holder of three AIAW titles (1976, '77, '80).

Washington earned a 3-0 win over Alabama State and took out LSU in four sets to advance. The Huskies finished the year undefeated in home matches. Kansas hosted in-state rival Wichita State in its first-round match and took out the Shockers, 3-1, before upending Creighton, 3-1, to advance to the regional semifinals for the first time in program history. BYU took five sets to beat Pac-12 foe Arizona State in Honolulu in a first-round match, but shocked host and 11th-seeded Hawai'i on the islands with a 3-0 sweep and will make its second straight appearance in the regional semifinals.

Since it opened in 2006, the Galen Center has hosted many high-profile sporting events including the 2012 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship and the 2007 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds. The 10,258-seat arena has also hosted the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, the MPSF Men's Volleyball Championship, and the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championships; the latter in each of the last seven years. Outside of sports, the venue is also the site of entertainment events such as the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards, Microsoft's E3, the League of Legends Championships, and popular reality talent show The X-Factor.
