SAN FRANCISCO - USC sophomore libero Taylor Whittingham was named the Pac-12 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 24-30. It is her first selection for conference weekly honors and is USC's 59th all-time weekly certificate not including 12 Freshman of the Week awards. Washington's Krista Vansant was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Oregon State's Mary-Kate Marshall was chosen for Freshman of the Week honors.
Whittingham posted a career-high 33 digs in a four-set win over No. 14 Arizona last week. She also had a pair of service aces and an assist against the Wildcats. It was Whittingham's second match over the 30-dig plateau this season. In a five-setter against crosstown rival UCLA, she finished with 20 digs to mark the 13th time that she has had at least 20 in a match. Whittingham has been in double digits for digs in a team-best 25 matches in 2014.
On the season, Whittingham leads the Pac-12 in digs (534) and digs per set (4.94 dps). Her 534 digs ranks seventh best in USC's single-season record books with only All-Americans Natalie Hagglund and Debora Seilhamer with higher totals. Whittingham also has 11 service aces and 76 assists this year.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the fourth year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.
The Women of Troy (15-15, 8-12 Pac-12) finished 10th in their conference, but were selected to the program's 24th straight NCAA tournament (32nd all-time). USC will face Coastal Carolina (25-6) of the Big South Conference in the first round on Friday, Dec. 5, at 4:30 p.m. ET in Chapel Hill, N.C. First- and second-round host North Carolina (26-2) sits on the other side of the bracket and will face Hampton (21-10) in the other first-round match.
