LOS ANGELES - The University of Southern California and the seventh-ranked Women of Troy will play host to the 2013 NCAA Women's Volleyball Los Angeles Regional Championship, Dec. 13-14 (Friday-Saturday), at the Galen Center.
Two semifinal matches are set for Friday (Dec. 13) at 5 p.m. PT and not before 7 p.m. Advancing teams will meet in the regional championship match on Saturday (Dec. 14) at 8:30 p.m. PT. Both semifinals will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and the championship match will be carried live by ESPNU. Sam Gore will serve as the broadcast play-by-play announcer with Holly McPeak as the color analyst.
The winner of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional Championship receives one of four coveted national semifinal spots in Seattle. The University of Washington and the Seattle Sports Commission in conjunction with Key Arena will serve as co-hosts of the 2013 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship with semifinals set for Thursday, Dec. 19 (4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. PT), and the championship match set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21. All matches at the championship site will be carried live on ESPN2.
Since it opened in 2006, the Galen Center has hosted many high-profile sporting events including the 2012 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship and the 2007 NCAA Women's Basketball First and Second Rounds. The 10,258-seat arena has also hosted the Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament, the MPSF Men's Volleyball Championship, and the first and second rounds of the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championships; the latter in each of the last seven years. Outside of sports, the venue is also the site of entertainment events such as the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards, Microsoft's E3, the League of Legends Championships, and popular reality talent show The X-Factor.
Currently ranked seventh, USC finished the regular season with a 26-5 overall record and a 16-4 mark in Pac-12 matches for third place. The Trojans are in position to receive their 23rd consecutive bid to the NCAA championships (31st overall) and are likely to host first- and second-round matches for the 11th straight year.
USC has hosted the NCAA's first or first- and second-round matches 20 times (1992-00, 2002-12). The only year the Trojans did not host opening-round matches was in 2001. USC has served as a regional championship host twice previously: once in 2000 and again in 2001.
The Trojans own a 115-34 all-time postseason record (.772) and are 69-27 (.719) in the NCAA tournament. USC has won six national championships including the first-ever NCAA title awarded in 1981. The Trojans also won back-to-back crowns in 2002 and 2003. USC is also the holder of three AIAW titles (1976, '77, '80). Last year, USC appeared in the Austin Regional Championship to mark the ninth time since the NCAA expanded to a field of 64 teams in 1998 that the Trojans advanced that far.
