WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC senior All-American libero Natalie Hagglund and sophomore outside hitter Samantha Bricio were each named Pac-12 Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 28-Nov. 3. Hagglund received her fifth award as the Defensive Player of the Week while Bricio took home her second such honor as the Offensive Player of the Week. With the two selections, Trojans have been named conference players of the week 57 times in program history. Washington State's Kyra Holt was chosen for the league's Freshman of the Week award.
Hagglund becomes just the 19th player in Pac-12 history to be chosen for weekly honors five times or more in her career. She becomes the third USC player to be honored five times and ties Jennifer Kessy and Asia Kaczor.
Bricio had a well-rounded weekend and helped the Trojans secure a pair of wins in the Bay Area over No. 6 Stanford (3-2) and No. 22 California (3-1). Bricio filled the box score, serving up five aces against Cal en route to recording the team's single-season mark in the category (61). She also added career highs for solo blocks (4), block assists (4) and total blocks (8). All told, Bricio scored 25.0 points with 14 kills to lead the Trojans to victory as she posted her fifth-straight double-double (seventh of the season and 18th of her career). She was also a force on the defensive end as she posted a career-best 23 digs to help the Trojans knock off the Cardinal on the road. On the weekend, she averaged 4.78 points, 4.00 digs, and 0.78 service aces per set.
Hagglund became the program's all-time career leader in digs over the weekend as she logged a pair of 36-dig matches. The marks tied for eighth in single-match performances in USC history, and were the second time in her career that she posted back-to-back 30-dig matches. She has tallied nine career matches with 30 digs or more. Hagglund averaged 8.00 digs per set in two big road wins over Stanford and Cal and moved into fifth all-time in Pac-12 history in career digs (2,131). Against Stanford, 16 of Hagglund's digs led straight to kills (.444) and while she was rarely served to, three of her seven passes led to kills (.429). Against the Bears, 12 of Hagglund's touches produced kills for the Trojans.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the third year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.
The fourth-ranked Trojans are 20-3 overall and 10-2 in the Pac-12 through 23 matches, this season. USC will host 2012 NCAA runner-up Oregon (Friday, Nov. 8) and Oregon State (Sunday, Nov. 10) at Galen Center. Please visit USCTrojans.com for more information and a complete schedule.
