SAN FRANCISCO -- USC women's volleyball freshman outside hitter Khalia Lanier was selected as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Oct. 10-16, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 17. It is Lanier's first-career weekly honor and is USC's 14th all-time Freshman of the Week certificate. Trojans also hold 68 Player of the Week honors, counted separately.
UCLA's Torrey Van Winden was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Taylor Formico was chosen for Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Lanier has been USC's go-to offensive weapon this season. Through 19 matches, she has logged nine double-doubles and is the only freshman to rank among the league's top 10 for kills (4.01 kps) and points (4.52 pps). She ranks fourth in both categories and is also eighth in service aces at 0.25 saps.
In pivotal Pac-12 road matches over the weekend, Lanier posted a new career high with 23 kills in a win over No. 16 Oregon. She also had eight digs in the contest and finished with a block and a .262 hitting percentage. In her next outing, Lanier put up 16 kills to lead the Trojans to a sweep of Oregon State and hit .289 to go with 14 digs, two blocks, and a service ace. In the two matches, Lanier averaged 5.57 kps and 3.14 dps while hitting .273.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the sixth year (since 2011) that the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and freshman honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC has had 13 offensive awards, nine defensive awards, and 14 freshman honors.
The Women of Troy (13-6, 5-3 Pac-12) are home to host California (8-10, 2-6) and Stanford (11-5, 5-3) at the Galen Center this week. The Trojans and the Golden Bears will meet on Friday (Oct. 21) at 6 p.m. PT in a match to be shown on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area. On Sunday, Oct. 23, the USC-Stanford match will be carried live on ESPNU with a 2 p.m. PT start.
