Bricio Named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week

    Freshman OH Samantha Bricio

    Oct. 9, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. - USC women's volleyball freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio was named the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on Tuesday, Oct. 9, to add yet another distinction to her already decorated resume. She is the seventh different Trojan to receive the award; the eighth time a USC player has been chosen.

Bricio was also named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and received her third Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor earlier this week following impressive performances in wins against Arizona and Arizona State.

Against the Wildcats (Oct. 5), Bricio had her fourth double-double of the year with a career-high 22 kills to go with 11 digs. Most impressively, she got her 22 kills with a scorching .475 hitting percentage. Bricio managed to out-do even herself just two days later against the Sun Devils (Oct. 7) as she knocked off her two-day-old career record with a new mark of 24 kills to go with a new career high of 16 digs and 60 attacks for her fifth double-double of the season. On the weekend, Bricio averaged an unthinkable 6.57 kills per set with a .380 hitting rate and posted nearly seven points per set (6.86 pps).

This is the third consecutive week that a Pac-12 Player of the Week has also been named the National Player of the Week. Bricio follows Washington sophomore outside hitter Krista Vansant (Oct. 2) and Oregon junior setter Lauren Plum (Sept. 25). Both Vansant and Plum earned the awards on the backs of performances against the Trojans.

The last USC freshman to be named National Player of the Week was three-time All-American outside hitter April Rosson Nov. 13, 2000. Ironically, Ross's award came after two impressive performances against Arizona and ASU as well. In the two matches, she averaged 4.60 kills, 1.63 digs, 0.88 blocks, 0.38 aces, and posted a .417 attack percentage.

Bricio is one of just two freshmen to receive the award in the last four years. The other is current sophomore Saitaua Iosia of Maryland Eastern Shore who was honored on Nov. 8, 2011.

USC travels to take on fourth-ranked Stanford on Wednesday, Oct. 10, for another top-10 clash on the Pac-12 Networks. The Trojans then wrap up their Bay Area tour with a match against California on Friday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. PT.
