WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC freshman outside hitter Elise Ruddins was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week of Sept. 9-15. The first-year Trojan was honored by the conference alongside Washington's Krista Vansant who was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Week, and Arizona State's Bianca Arrellano who was named Defensive Player of the Week.
It is USC's seventh all-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award. Fellow freshman outside hitter Ebony Nwanebu won the honor in the first week of the season and current sophomore outside hitter Samantha Bricio was selected for the honor five times in 2012. Only offensive and defensive weekly awards are counted in a team's total conference weekly honors of which the Trojans own 53 all-time.
Ruddins played like anything but a freshman over the weekend and was instrumental in helping the Women of Troy to a pair of victories in the USD Tournament on her way to nabbing a spot on the all-tournament team. In a four-set win over UC Santa Barbara, Ruddins carried the load for USC as she posted 24 kills (6e, 43att) and hit an impressive .419. She averaged six kills per set and had nine in the first set alone. Later the same day, Ruddins logged 14 kills (5e, 27att) and hit .333 to help the Trojans sweep Eastern Washington in three sets. In her two matches, she had 38 kills (5.43 kps) and scored 39.0 points (5.57 pps).
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the third year in which the conference has selected separate offensive, defensive, and rookie honorees.
The Women of Troy (8-1) open their home schedule with a 7 p.m. PT matchup against UC Irvine (7-3) on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Galen Center. For more information and a complete schedule, please visit www.USCTrojans.com.
