SAN FRANCISCO -- USC senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio was chosen to receive Pac-12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 7-13, making her just the second player in league history to receive the award three times in a row in the same season; the first since Stanford's Logan Tom in 2001. It is her sixth-career weekly conference award and is USC's 62nd all-time weekly certificate not including 12 Freshman of the Week awards.
Washington's Lianna Sybeldon was named the Defensive Player of the Week and UCLA's Zana Muno was chosen for Freshman of the Week honors.
Bricio (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 USC Classic tournament after leading the Women of Troy to four straight 3-0 sweeps which included wins over Utah State, Pepperdine, Idaho State, and New Mexico. Her MVP award was the eighth time she has received a pre-conference MVP trophy and marked the 13th time she was chosen to an all-tournament team.
During the tourney, Bricio moved from ninth place up to sixth place in USC program history for career kills. She went ahead of Trojan legends April Ross (7th), Nancy Hillman (8th), and Katie Haller (9th), and now has 1,586 career kills. In the match against Utah State, Bricio tied her own career mark and the USC single-match record for service aces with eight. That same day, she served five more against Pepperdine for 13 in one day. It was the 15th time in her career that she served five or more aces in the same match.
In the four matches, Bricio totaled 67 kills and hit .404 to average 5.58 kps. From the service line, she served up more than an ace per set of action and finished with 14 total (1.17 saps) and led the Trojans in scoring with 7.17 pps.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the fifth year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.
The third-ranked Women of Troy are 10-0 to start the season for the seventh time under head coach Mick Haley. USC has won 29 straight sets and has swept its opponent in each of the last nine matches. The Trojans return to the road this week for a pair of matches against host Oklahoma (Thursday, Sept. 17) and Maryland (Friday, Sept. 18) in the Oklahoma Invitational at McCasland Field House in Norman, Okla. USC's match with the Sooners will be carried live on Fox College Sports at 8 p.m. CT (6 p.m. PT).
