SAN FRANCISCO -- USC senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio received Pac-12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6. It is the second consecutive week she has been chosen for the award, and her fifth-career honor. Bricio's selection is USC's 61st all-time weekly certificate not including 12 Freshman of the Week awards. Utah's Brenna DeYoung was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Oregon's Lindsey Vander Weide was chosen for Freshman of the Week honors.
Bricio (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico) was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 UNI Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa, after leading the Women of Troy to a 3-0 mark with a trio of 3-0 sweeps including of No. 10 Kentucky. Her MVP award was the seventh time she has received a pre-conference MVP trophy and marked the 12th time she was chosen to an all-tournament team.
During the tourney, Bricio crossed the 1,000 career-dig mark against Creighton, and then later reached 1,500 career kills against Kentucky to become just the sixth Trojan player to collect 1,000 digs and 1,500 kills in her career. She completed the tournament with 34 kills (9e, 79att) and a .316 hitting percentage to go with six service aces, 28 digs, and six blocks. In USC's match against tournament host Northern Iowa, Bricio posted 11 kills with 13 digs for her third double-double of the season; the 44th of her career. She also had three service aces to account for the 29th time in her career that she has served three or more aces in a single match.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the fifth year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.
The eighth-ranked Women of Troy are 6-0 to start the season for the 15th time in program history (ninth time under head coach Mick Haley). USC has won 17 straight sets and is now 3-0 against ranked competition (No. 7 North Carolina, No. 10 Kentucky, and No. 11 BYU). The Trojans return to Galen Center this week to host the USC Classic Thursday-Saturday (Sept. 10-12) with matches against Pepperdine, New Mexico, Utah State, and Idaho State.
