Samantha Bricio Takes Home Second Pac-12 Weekly Honor|
Sept. 3, 2012
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - For the second consecutive week, USC women's volleyball freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio was named the Pac-12's Freshman of the Week for the week of Aug. 27-Sept. 2. After an impressive performance in the Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational, Bricio was named to the all-tournament team.
She was the first-ever Trojan recipient of the Freshman of the Week award and now has already added a second certificate to her resume. Washington's Krista Vansant was voted the conference's Offensive Player of the Week and UCLA's Karsta Lowe was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Bricio, a native of Guadalajara, Mexico, earned the second all-tournament selection of her young career after she helped the Women of Troy claim the Trojan Invitational title. She logged the second double-double of her career with 13 kills and 10 digs against a 23rd-ranked Northern Iowa team. Against Boston College, she had a third set in which she scored six kills without an error. She did the same against Mississippi State and had nine digs to go with a career-best three service aces. Since her first collegiate match, Bricio has had five straight outings in which she has reached double digits in kills. She did so, this weekend, while she maintained a .333 hitting rate. She also averaged 3.71 kills, 2.71 digs, and 1.29 blocks per set.
Bricios's second weekly honor is USC's 49th overall. Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the second year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and rookie honoree.
USC returns to action as hosts of a six-match tournament when No. 17 San Diego, Notre Dame, and Cal Poly visit Galen Center for the USC Classic Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8. Please visit USCTrojans.com for more information.
