WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - USC freshman outside hitter Ebony Nwanebu was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the opening week of the season on Monday, Sept. 2. The first-year Trojan was honored by the conference alongside UCLA's Karsta Lowe who was chosen as the Offensive Player of the Week, and Utah's Erin Redd-Brandon who was named Defensive Player of the Week.

It is USC's sixth all-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week award. Current sophomore outside hitter Samantha Bricio was selected for the honor five times in 2012, and like Nwanebu, received the award following the first weekend of her collegiate career. Only offensive and defensive weekly awards are counted in a team's total conference honors of which the Trojans own 53 all-time.

A native of Lucas, Texas, Nwanebu opened her career in impressive fashion as she averaged 3.75 kills, 1.12 blocks, and 4.44 points per set in USC's wins over No. 16 Purdue (3-1), No. 21 Western Kentucky (3-0), and Alabama A&M (3-0) in the Mortar Board Premier tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. For her performance, Nwanebu was selected to the all-tournament team.

In her first-ever collegiate match, Nwanebu hit .424 and had a team-high 15 kills with just one error on 33 attempts, and 20 points to help the Trojans come back from a one-set deficit against the host Boilermakers before a hostile crowd of over 2,600 hometown fans. She also contributed eight blocks in the match. Nwanebu followed up her first outing with another solid performance against the Hill Toppers with 13 kills (2e) on 24 swings for a .458 hitting percentage.

Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Pac-12 began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the third year in which the conference has selected separate offensive, defensive, and rookie honorees.

The Women of Troy will return to the Midwest this week for a pair of matches in the Marquette Challenge on Sept. 6 (Friday), and then play a single match at Northern Illinois (Sept. 7). For more information and a complete schedule, please visit www.USCTrojans.com.
