SAN FRANCISCO -- USC senior outside hitter Samantha Bricio was named the Pac-12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 24-30. It is her fourth-career honor and is USC's 60th all-time weekly certificate not including 12 Freshman of the Week awards. Arizona's Kalei Mau was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Stanford's Hayley Hodson was chosen for Freshman of the Week honors.
Bricio was named Most Valuable Player of the 2015 Women of Troy Baden Invitational this weekend, as she led the then 22nd-ranked Trojans to a 3-0 mark and upset victories over No. 7 North Carolina and No. 11 BYU. It was the sixth time in her career that she received pre-conference tournament MVP honors and the 11th time that she has been chosen to a pre-conference all-tournament team.
Against the Tar Heels, Bricio led all players with 24 kills (10e, 57att, .246) and notched 18 digs to go with five blocks on defense. She also served one ace and received serve 33 times with only one error. She was used limitedly against Chicago State and finished with nine kills (2e, 20att, .350) and had three digs and three service aces. Bricio was the catalyst for USC's win over the Cougars as she put up 25 kills (7e, 45att) and hit .400 to go with 11 digs, one service ace, and three blocks. Her two double-doubles were the 42nd and 43rd of her career.
In three matches, Bricio hit .320 and picked up 58 kills (5.80 kps). She was an integral defender as well with 3.20 dps and 0.80 bps. In all, Bricio scored 67 points (6.70 pps) to power the USC offense. During the tournament, she moved from 12th up to ninth on USC's all-time career list for kills. She now has 1,485 as she passed Keao Burdine (2001-04) and Megan McAllister (1987-90). She is also now only two digs shy of cracking the 1,000 career digs mark.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the fifth year the Pac-12 has announced an offensive, defensive, and rookie honoree. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution.
The eighth-ranked Women of Troy head to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this weekend (Sept. 4-5), for the UNI Tournament hosted by the University of Northern Iowa at the McLeod Center. USC will take on Creighton (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 4, and then meets No. 10 Kentucky (3-0) and host UNI (1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 5.
