LEXINGTON, Ky. - The USC women's volleyball team received the No. 4 ranking in the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll on Monday, Aug. 12. The Women of Troy have advanced to four NCAA regional finals in the last six years and were selected to finish 2nd in the Pac-12 by the league's coaches, last week.

USC received 1,307 points and was the second of five Pac-12 squads to be ranked in the first poll of 2013. Defending conference champion Stanford earned two first-place votes (1,379 points) and was ranked third. Last year's NCAA champion Texas (1,490) took the lion's share of first-place votes with 55 and holds the top spot in the poll. Penn State received three first-place votes (1,425 points) and was ranked second.

Washington followed the top four in fifth place (1,167) with Minnesota, Michigan, Oregon, Florida, and Nebraska rounding out the top 10. Hawai'i is ranked No. 11 with UCLA at No. 12. California received enough votes to garner 16 points among teams receiving votes on two or more ballots.

The Trojans appear in the AVCA weekly poll for the 428th time, which is fifth most in the history of the poll. It is the 276th time that USC holds a spot among the top 10 teams in the nation, which ties for the sixth most in the poll's history.

Last year, the Trojans were ranked fifth to open the season and rose to as high as No. 2 in mid-September. USC received the No. 6 ranking in the final poll of 2012 following a finish in the NCAA Austin Regional Championship match.

Of teams ranked in the preseason top 25, USC will face opponents that hold rankings at least 10 times in the regular season. The Trojans will play No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 Washington, No. 8 Oregon, and No. 12 UCLA twice each, this season, and will also take on No. 16 Purdue to open the year at the Mortar Board Premiere, and No. 21 Western Kentucky at the same tournament in West Lafayette, Ind.

USC will also have to meet San Diego (No. 26) in a road match and will play California two times. The Golden Bears received votes and hold 16 points in the preseason poll.

The Trojans opened fall camp on Saturday (Aug. 10) and were selected to finish second in the Pac-12 in a preseason poll of the conference's coaches. The league's coaches also chose senior libero Natalie Hagglund and sophomore outside hitter Samantha Bricioto the first-ever preseason all-conference team.

Last year, the Trojans appeared in their fourth NCAA regional final in six years. Hagglund became a two-time AVCA All-American and Bricio was chosen as the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year as well as a third-team All-American by Volleyball Magazine and its National Freshman of the Year. USC finished in third place in the Pac-12 with a 15-5 record (30-6 overall).

Under 13th-year head coach Mick Haley (37th year overall), the Trojans open 2013 on the road at the Mortar Board Premiere hosted by Purdue (Aug. 30-31) in West Lafayette, Ind. USC will play its first home match against UC Irvine at 7 p.m. PT on Wednesday (Sept. 18). The Trojans will face the Anteaters in a nationally televised match on ESPNU.
