Top-Ranked US Women March Ahead to Quarterfinals
Aug. 5, 2012
Former USC standout libero Nicole Davis had 10 digs as the top-ranked USA women's volleyball team (5-0) earned its third consecutive sweep in a 3-0 win (27-25, 25-16, 25-19) against eighth-ranked Turkey (2-3) on Sunday (Aug. 5) at Earls Court in London. With the top seed already secured, the victory allowed the Americans to complete a five-match sweep of Pool B as they head into the Olympic quarterfinals. Team USA will face a familiar foe in the quarterfinals. 11th-ranked NORCECA rival Dominican Republic (2-3) takes the court against USA on Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time (11 a.m. PT). Dominican Republic was the fourth-place team in Pool A. In other quarterfinal matches, Russia (5-0) draws Brazil (3-2) in a 7 a.m. PT match. China (3-2) and Japan (3-2) will take the court at 5 a.m. PT, and Pool A's second-place team Italy (4-1) will get Korea (2-3) in a 1 p.m. PT match. A win by team USA would pit it against the winner of the Italy-Korea match for a semifinal bout on Thursday, Aug. 9. USA is seeking its first-ever gold medal in women's volleyball. Davis, who helped USC capture the 2002 and 2003 NCAA titles, is appearing in her second Olympic Games. She and her USA teammates won a silver medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing.
