USC Advances With Sweep Of Tulsa In NCAA Second Round

LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Alexis Olgard (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) had 11 kills with no errors Saturday as the No. 7-seeded USC Women of Troy swept the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-19), in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament. Olgard hit .733 (11-0-15) as the Trojans hit .372 as a team with four players recording double-digit kills in the match.
USC (27-4) advances to the Honolulu Regional next weekend and will play No. 10-seed Hawai'i in the third round on Friday (December 9). The match features two of the top three teams in the nation according to the latest AVCA poll (No. 1 USC and No. 3 Hawai'i).
Senior All-America outside hitter Alex Jupiter had 10 kills while hitting .333 with nine digs and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Katie Fuller had 10 kills and six digs while hitting .400 (10-0-25) while senior All-America middle blocker Lauren Williams posted 10 kills and four blocks while hitting .368. Kendall Bateman had 38 assists and eight digs while sophomore libero Natalie Hagglund led with 17 digs.
Tulsa finished its season with a 28-7 record and the Conference USA regular-season championship. Kellie Culbertson led the Golden Hurricane with 12 kils and 13 digs. Tyler Henderson had 10 kills, hitting .188, after posting 30 kills in a four-set win on Friday against Oklahoma in first-round action. Miriele Gobbo had seven kills and hit .417 with two blocks. Jordan Clampitt recorded 22 assists and three digs for Tulsa with the Golden Hurricane hitting .158 as a team for the match.
USC jumped out early on Tulsa in the first set with a 10-2 run. Jupiter and Williams teamed on a block to finish five straight points and a commanding 17-5 lead. Henderson had four kills late in the set, but USC was able to take the opening set by hitting .444 with 14 kills against just two errors.
Three hitting errors in the second set by the Golden Hurricane helped USC take the 9-7 lead. Culbertson brought TU within one on a kill at 11-10. Fuller and Sara Shaw terminated to put USC up by three at the media timeout, 15-12. Olgard took control of the set with four kills as the 6-1 run put the Women of Troy up by six, 19-13. Henderson and Culbertson recorded two kills each, but Olgard made it a 2-0 lead in the match for the Trojans.
In the third set, USC opened with an 11-5 run with Jupiter and Olgard going back-to-back. Jupiter pushed it to a seven-point lead with a kill for the 14-7 score. Carly Boatwright put two down for Tulsa to get her team within three at 17-14. Olgard made it 20-15 for USC, but Boatwright and Culbertson again kept the deficit at three, 20-17. Williams posted two kills at the end and Jupiter finished off the sweep with a service ace in the back right corner.
