No. 10 USC Sweeps Arizona At The Galen Center

LOS ANGELES -- Jessica Gysin and Alex Jupiter had 10 kills each Friday as the No. 10 USC Women of Troy swept the Arizona Wildcats, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16), in a Pac-10 match at the Galen Center. Jupiter hit .364 (10-2-22) for the Trojans.
USC improved to 15-8 on the season and 8-6 in Pac-10 play, good for fifth place. Arizona is now 14-11 overall and 4-9 in conference.
Gysin hit .280 (10-3-25) with seven digs and two blocks. Junior All-America setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 35 assists and 12 digs for the Trojans while sophomore middle blocker Zoe Garrett had five kills, four digs, three blocks and two aces.
Tiffany Owens led Arizona with nine kills and five digs while middle blocker Stephanie Snow had seven kills and a .583 night (7-0-12).
USC hit .299 in the match, holding Arizona to a .098 performance as the Wildcats committed 21 hitting errors. The Trojans used six service aces to help the attack and outdug Arizona by a 55-42 margin.
Gysin's solo block helped USC race out to an 8-0 lead at the beginning of the first set. Arizona answered with an 8-4 run as Owens made it a 12-8 deficit for the Wildcats. Zoe Garrett started a 7-1 run for the Trojans as Gysin chalked up two more kills for the 19-9 lead and the eventual first set win.
After trailing 4-3 in the second set, UA reeled off five straight points as Snow used two kills to take the 8-4 lead. Carico brought USC to within two at 10-8 on an overpass kill and service ace. Owens made it a 13-10 lead for Arizona with a kill before USC took control with a 7-1 run. Roleder figured in the first three points with a kill and two straight aces. Two Trojan blocks kept the lead at 21-16 before gaining a 2-0 lead in the match.
With a 7-6 lead in the third set, USC dominated the remainder of the match with a 13-2 run as Garrett and Gysin garnered three kills each in the streak. Audrey Eichler, who made her first start as a Trojan, closed out the sweep with her fifth kill on the evening.
USC concludes the home portion of its 2008 regular season schedule tomorrow with a 7 p.m. match against Arizona State. The match will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
Notes: Sophomore Audrey Eichler (Pacific Palisades/Harvard-Westlake HS) made her first start at USC tonight in place of Lauren Williams (injury)...Eichler transferred to USC this season after playing her freshman year at Boston College...Taylor Carico now has 3,945 career assists, 55 away from becoming just the second setter in USC history to reach 4,000 assists in her career (Janice Mounts-4,258)...Freshman Alex Jupiter needs six kills to reach 300 for the season...USC is now 36-3 all-time at the Galen Center.
