Oct. 15, 2011
LOS ANGELES - Junior outside hitter Katie Fuller had nine kills while hitting .692 (9-0-13) as the No. 3 USC Women of Troy swept the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-15), at the Galen Center.
USC won its season-high 10th straight conference match, the most by the Trojans since the 2003 national championship season when the Women of Troy were a perfect 18-0 to win the conference title. The Trojans hit .356 tonight with only nine hitting errors as a team while holding the Beavers to a .042 hitting night. USC is now 15-3 overall and 10-1 in conference while Oregon State is now 11-9 overall and 3-7 in conference.
The Women of Troy were able to use 14 players in the match as several players off the bench registered season-highs. Sophomore Alexis Olgard had two kills and four blocks while freshman outside hitter Emily Young had five kills (no errors for a .556 performance) with two blocks. Freshman setter Hayley Crone had a season-high 10 assists while freshman Bria Russ had two aces. Senior All-American Alex Jupiter tied Fuller with nine kills, hitting .320 (9-1-25) with three aces, 11 digs and three blocks.
Camille Saxton led the Beavers with nine kills, seven digs and two blocks while Megan McBride had four kills, 15 assists, one ace, eight digs and one block.
In the first set, USC jumped out to a 10-3 lead on Sara Shaw's kill. USC made it a 19-8 score as Kirby Burnham would record back-to-back kills to close out the set. At 8-7 in the second, Shaw tallied a kill and service ace to start a 6-2 run. A 10-4 run by the Women of Troy, including five straight points, gave the 2-0 match lead to the home team.
With the 4-3 lead early in the third, USC took charge again with four straight points as Kendall Bateman and Hannah Schraer used one of the team's nine blocks in the match to keep the Beavers from mounting a comeback. The Trojans would use an 8-3 flurry at the end to finish off the sweep.
USC continues Pac-12 Conference play next weekend with home matches against Utah on Friday (Oct. 21) and Colorado on Saturday (Oct. 22) with a 7 p.m. start for both matches. A live video webcast with Gametracker stats will be available on usctrojans.com.
