LOS ANGELES - OH Antoinette Polk posted a career-high 30 kills to lead No. 19 USC women's volleyball to a five-game victory (9-15, 12-15, 17-15, 15-6, 15-11) over Washington State in Pullman, Wash. on Thursday (Sept. 30) night. Rebounding from a two-game deficit, the Trojans battled back with a season-high 93 team kills for the win.
USC improved to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10. Washington State fell to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
While Polk earned her seventh double-double (30 kills, 16 digs) this season, OH Lauren Killian notched an unprecedented triple-double with 10 kills, 10 digs and 10 blocks in the match. Setter Heidi Munneke also tallied a career performance with 80 assists. The Trojans strength at the net was reinforced by MB Jennifer Pahl who led the match with 15 total blocks and added 19 kills. The Women of Troy extend their blocking streak to six matches after out-blocking the Cougars 24.0 to 10.0, their largest margin this season.
Washington State was led by freshman LaToya Harris who posted 22 kills, and Joy Sperry who had 18 kills and a match-high 21 digs. Cougar setter Melissa Wright fell just three assists short of the school record of 85 assists.
After dropping the first two games (9-15, 12-15), the Trojans fought hard in game four to tie the score at 14 following two kills by Pahl and OH Janae Henry. The two prevailed at the net, forcing consecutive hitting errors to earn the 17-15 win. The Trojans marched through game four, 15-6, and stole the remaining momentum to earn a fifth-game victory, 15-11.
USC will prepare to face Washington in Seattle, Wash. on Friday, October 1 at 7 p.m.
