Las Vegas, Nev. -- Led by Amber Oliver’s 13 kills (.458), No. 19 Southern California claimed the UNLV Invitational Championship by defeating host UNLV 12-15, 15-4, 15-10, 15-13 at Lied Gymnasium Saturday. The Trojans earned their first tournament championship of the 1999 season, and improve to 5-2 overall.
The victory snapped the Rebel’s 15-match home win streak, and gave UNLV its first loss of the season.
Oliver’s 13 kills (.458) marked a personal career-best, and tied a career-high record with six blocks, matching her performance against Oral Roberts in the first round of the tournament. Antoinette Polk pounded 12 kills (.226) and collected 21 digs for USC, and Jennifer Pahl tallied 10 kills (.364) and a match-high seven blocks in the match.
Two Trojans garnered all-tournament accolades including Pahl and Janae Henry. Henry was named tournament MVP after a career-high performance against Oral Roberts with 21 kills (.436), 15 digs and two aces.
The Trojans will face Arizona State on Friday, September 24, and Arizona on Saturday, September 25, to begin the 1999 conference schedule.
