No. 19 Notre Dame Rallies For 3-1 Victory Over No. 8 USC
Sept. 9, 2005
SAN ANTONIO - Lauren Kelbley recorded 25 kills Friday as the No. 19 Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated the No. 8 USC Women of Troy, 3-0 (23-30, 32-30, 30-26, 30-27), in day one action at the UTSA Dome Rally. Notre Dame was able to rally from several deficits, including being down by eight points in the third game from the Alamodome.
Notre Dame's win is the second Top 25 victory after the Fighting Irish (4-0) defeated Texas last week.
USC junior libero Debora Seilhamer tied a school record with 36 digs for a four-game match. Senior outside hitter Staci Venski led the Women of Troy with 20 kills while freshman middle blocker/outside hitter Kelli Tennant hit a game-high .304 (9-2-23).
Sophomore Katelyn Bishop set a career-best with 11 kills for the Women of Troy.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the first, the Women of Troy scored five straight points on Bibiana Candelas' serve. USC (2-3) halted a potential rally by Notre Dame on a dual block by Candelas and Diane Copenhagen to keep it a 16-11 Women of Troy lead. Tennant closed out game one with the kill as USC hit .382 against Notre Dame's .026 percentage.
Down by six in the second game, the Fighting Irish came back with a five-point run with Adrianna Stasiuk serving. Another stretch with Stasiuk behind the line gave ND its first lead of the game at 26-24. USC looked to take control with a 29-27 advantage, but the Fighting Irish outscored their opponent by a 5-1 margin as Meg Henican slammed the game-winner to tie the match.
It was all USC early in game three until Notre Dame bounced back from a 12-4 deficit with nine straight points. A service error stopped the run as both teams traded points throughout the remainder of the game. Notre Dame was able to gather momentum late as Kelbley put the Irish ahead, two games to one, with a cross-court shot.
Both teams battled again in game four as neither team held a lead higher than two points until Notre Dame took a 22-19 advantage. Brewster added a kill and a solo block for a 25-20 lead before the Irish closed out the victory.
The Women of Troy plays No. 6 Florida tomorrow in a 4:30 p.m. Central match and concludes on Sunday (Sept. 11) against No. 13 Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
