LOS ANGELES - Junior setter Kendall Bateman (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) posted career-highs Saturday with 66 assists and 18 digs as the No. 10 USC Women of Troy defeated the Cal State Fullerton Titans, 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-19), to win the 2010 Luxe City Center Trojan Invitational. Bateman earned tournament most valuable player honors.
USC (3-0) hit .355 in the match with junior All-American Alex Jupiter (Paris, France/Redondo Union HS) registering a team-high 23 kills and adding three aces and 10 digs. Junior middle blocker Lauren Williams had 14 kills and no errors for a .609 night (14-0-23) with freshman outside hitter Falyn Fonoimoana adding 14 kills and three blocks. Freshman libero Natalie Hagglund had 21 digs for the Trojans.
Erin Saddler led Cal State Fullerton (2-1) with 19 digs on 55 swings with Kayla Neto adding 15 kills while hitting .500 (15-2-26). Cami Croteau had 18 digs.
Down 6-4 in the first set, Fonoimoana started a streak of six points for the Trojans with a kill from the back row. Geena Urango added two aces in the mix for the 10-6 USC lead. Torrie Brown drew the Titans even at 16. CSF took the advantage on two kills from Neto with Fonoimoana later making it 20-20. Saddler's kill started three in a row as Fullerton took control of the set. Andrea Ragan dumped a ball on the back side for a point and Saddler's tip gave the set win to the visiting Titans. Fonoimoana registered eight kills in the first set. The Titans hit .536 with only one error in the set.
Back-to-back errors by the Trojans gave CSF a 6-3 lead in the second set. Zoe Garrett's kill began a 6-1 run for the Women of Troy, but Leah Maurer's kill tied it at 9-9. Jupiter put the Trojans ahead again and two key kills from freshman Sara Shaw kept USC on top, 15-11. Two overpass kills from Jupiter kept USC ahead by four, 21-17. After Jupiter made it 23-19, Neto had two bookend kills as the Titans ralled with four straight to tie it at 23-23. Williams and Neto notched kills for each team, but it was Shaw and Fonoimoana going back-to-back as USC tied the match.
Fonoimoana helped the Trojans break away from a 7-7 tie in the third set as a 6-3 run put them ahead, 13-10. Maurer cut the deficit to one at 16-15, but Fonoimoana had another kill to stay in the lead. Three Fullerton attack errors led the way for a 23-17 score as Fonoimoana ended the third set with another kill and a 2-1 match advantage for USC.
Jupiter's kill in the fourth set snapped the 10-10 tie as the Women of Troy did not look back. Later in the set, Jupiter had three straight kills to finish the match as another Fullerton hitting error secured the win.
