LOS ANGELES -- The seventh-ranked USC women's volleyball team (0-3) was swept, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22, by UC Irvine (1-2) in the final match of the USC Baden Invitational at Galen Center on Saturday, Aug. 27. The loss left the Trojans in fourth place in the tournament standings. Santa Clara (3-0) won the tourney title after defeating Marquette (2-1) in the early-evening match. UC Irvine finished third.
Freshman outside hitter Khalia Lanier was chosen to the all-tournament team following her second-straight double-digit kills performance. She finished with 12 kills (5e) on 31 swings and had a .226 hitting percentage to go with five digs, a service ace, and a pair of blocks (one solo). Sophomore outside hitter Alyse Ford had seven kills (3e, 15att, .267) and junior opposite hitter Niki Withers contributed eight kills (5e, 21att, .143).
USC hit .204 (41k, 20e, 103att) and had 15 assists each from senior Alice Pizzasegola and junior Reni Meyer-Whalley. Meyer-Whalley also served a pair of aces to go with five digs. On defense, senior libero Taylor Whittingham had eight digs.
For UC Irvine, Victoria Dennis topped all players with 18 kills (1e, 26att) and a .654 hitting percentage. Haley DeSales had 10 kills (6e, 23att, .174) and posted a double-double with 10 digs. DeSales also served an ace and had three blocks.
The teams were tied for a fourth time in the first set at 11-all, but UCI inched ahead several times until it held the final lead it would need at 18-17. The Anteaters grabbed set point at 24-21, but the Trojans saved a pair before a long serve sealed USC's first-set loss. The Women of Troy rolled out to a 15-12 lead in the second set on an ace by Meyer-Whalley, but were caught at 16-all when the Anteaters tied the score for an eighth time. The Trojans knocked down a kill for a 21-all tie, but UC Irvine ran away with the final four points of the frame to sew up a 2-0 lead in the match.
UC Irvine had its way in the opening rallies of set three and climbed up by five points with a 6-1 lead, but the Trojans chipped away and knotted the score at 11-all. Later, a 7-1 run put USC on top by four points, 16-12. The Trojan lead wasn't safe, however, as UCI mounted its own comeback to even the score at 19-all. A 9-1 run did USC in as the Eaters went up by five and seized match point at 24-19. Dennis had seven of UCI's final nine points, all on kills, as she single-handedly closed the books on the three-set sweep.
Next weekend, the Women of Troy return to the floor at Galen Center to host the Radisson Classic as Kentucky, Northern Iowa, and Creighton come to town. The Trojans' Saturday (Sept. 3) matches against Northern Iowa (10 a.m.) and Creighton (8 p.m.) will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
