As a reserve, Julie Mariani helped lead USC to the 2002 NCAA Championship for the first time in 21 years... She played in 47 games, appeared in 24 matches and made one start... Averaged 0.04 assists, 0.09 service aces and 0.85 digs per game... Had her best outing against Oregon State (Oct. 11) where she played in all three games and collected seven digs.
2001 JUNIOR SEASON
Mariani played in 26 matches and 58 games as a junior... Playing backrow, she averaged 0.83 digs and 0.05 service aces per game... She earned her first-ever kill against UC Irvine (Sept. 1) to start the season... Had a season-high five digs against Arizona State (Sept. 28) and a season-best two aces against Utah State (Sept. 8).
2000 SOPHOMORE SEASON
Mariani played in 50 games and appeared in 27 matches... Averaged 0.96 digs and 0.12 aces per game... Tallied five digs against Oregon State (Oct. 26) and four against Oregon (Oct. 27)... Played in all eight games against Arizona State (Nov. 9) and Arizona (Nov. 10) contributing nine total digs... Contributed two aces in two games played against Notre Dame (Nov. 24)... Added a season-high eight digs against Florida in the NCAA Regionals (Dec. 7)... Underwent minor knee surgery in the summer after dealing with various injuries during the 2000 season.
1999 FRESHMAN SEASON
Mariani played in 107 games and all 30 matches, making several starts in the back row, as a freshman... While collecting 243 digs (2.27 dpg) on the year, her most notable accomplishment was leading the team and the Pac-10 in service aces with 50 and a 0.47 per game average... She currently ranks sixth among USC?s all-time career leaders in service ace average... The 0.47 mark tied USC?s single season record for ace average and her 50 aces ranked third on the Trojan season list... Recorded her career-high against UCLA (Nov. 19) with five aces... Against James Madison (Nov. 26), she contributed another career-best five service aces.
Mariani is a 1999 graduate of St. Francis High in Mountain View, Calif... She played three years of soccer and volleyball... In volleyball, she earned all-league honors her junior and senior seasons... Helped lead her team to the CIF championships as a senior... She played for the silver medal-winning Junior Olympics team in the summer following her senior year... Also played for the Griffin, Mizuno and Citybeach (under head coach Dave Halloway) club teams.
Julie Frances Mariani was born on May 6, 1981, in Mountain View, Calif. ... The daughter of David and Arlene Mariani, she has four sisters, Nancy, Molly, Janna and Tracy... Her cousin, Nicole Gaetano, also attended USC... She enjoys taking trips with her family and plans to travel to Europe after graduation... She is a business major who hopes to enter the field of marketing.
