Sue Lerner begins her 34th season at USC as athletic trainer for men's and women's volleyball and women's golf.
A native of Traverse City, Michigan, Lerner earned her bachelor's degree in 1973 at Central Michigan before moving on to Michigan State, where she earned her master's degree in 1975.
She was hired as one of the profession's first female athletic trainers, spending three years (1975-77) at Michigan State. As MSU's first-ever female athletic trainer, she handled various women's sports including basketball, volleyball, swimming, track and field and gymnastics.
Lerner was hired at USC in the fall of 1978, where she began with the women's basketball and volleyball teams. She has worked for many national championship squads, including four in women's volleyball (1980, 1981, 2002 and 2003) and two in women's basketball (1983 and 1984). She also worked with women's tennis under Dave Borelli, who also won several national titles during Lerner's tenure.
Lerner and her husband, Steve, enjoy traveling during the off-season.
