Beavers Upset USC In Four Games
CORVALLIS, Oregon -- The Oregon State volleyball team upset 11th-ranked USC in Pac-10 Conference volleyball action Thursday night.
The Beavers downed USC in four games, 15-13, 15-11, 14-16, 15-12, to snap a six-match losing streak. Oregon State improved to 17-11 overall and 6-11 in league action, while the Trojans slipped to 17-8 and 11-6 in Pac-10 play.
Junior outside hitter Pia Ahlengard led the Beaver offense with a career high 29 kills. Ahlengard committed just three errors in 66 attempts for a 39.4 attack percentage, while adding 14 digs, two service aces and five blocks.
Heather Lowe, a junior hitter, followed Ahlengard with 28 kills and also had two aces.
For the Trojans, senior outside hitter Vesna Dragicevic was kill leader with 17 and sophomore hitter Jennifer Kessy added 16. Sophomore middle blocker Jasmina Marinkovic was top blocker for the Trojans with two solo stuffs and seven block assists.
The Beavers won the final game, 15-12, on a kill by Prieto after jumping out to a 9-0 lead. In the lone game lost by Oregon State, it held a 14-10 lead before the Trojans ran off six straight points to win, 16-14. Both games one and two were close throughout, and in game two the score was tied five times before the Beavers pulled out the win on a kill by Lowe.
The win marked the first time since 1986 that Oregon State swept the Trojans in the home-away series. OSU remains home to host UCLA (15-12, 7-9 Pac-10), Friday at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. The UCLA match marks the final home match of the season for the Beavers.
