    Kipps Named Academic All-American

USC junior middle blocker Alaina Kipps was among 6 women's volleyball players named to the 1997 GTE/CoSIDA District VIII Academic All-American first team as announced today.

Kipps, a first-year starter from Santa Cruz, Calif., carries a 4.0 GPA in pyscho-biology. She was also named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team.

After playing only a small role as a freshman and a sophomore, Kipps has been a huge component in USC's fortunes in 1997.

The junior leads USC in blocking average (1.63), total blocks (153) and block assists (135). Her block assist total is the second-highest in USC history and her blocking average is currently good for second. She is also hitting a solid .265 with 178 kills, fourth on the team.

Kipps will be on the national GTE/CoSIDA All-American ballot. First, second and third team national winners will be announced on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
