USTA Names Maria Sanchez to Master'U BNP Paribas Team

    Nov. 22, 2010

USC senior Maria Sanchez has been selected to represent the United States in the fifth annual Master'U BNP Paribas. The tournament, which will be held from December 9-12 in Rouen, France, is an intercollegiate competition in which eight countries from around the world will play for the title.

The United States, which is in the tournament for the third consecutive year including a win in 2009, will compete in a best-of-seven format against teams from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland and Mexico. Three collegiate men and three women were picked for Team USA, which will be coached by Greg Patton from Boise State. Sanchez will be joined by teammates Kristy Frilling (Notre Dame), Allie Will (Florida), Sekou Bangoura (Florida), Reid Carleton (Duke) and Austing Krajicek (Texas A&M) for the international trip next month.

Sanchez was ranked third in the ITA Preseason Division 1 singles rankings and is poised to open the coming fall season as the nation's No. 1 player after winning the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships earlier this month. Sanchez picked off a whole set of ranked players on her way to defeating top-ranked Jana Juricova of Cal in three sets at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., claiming the senior's biggest tournament win to date.
