Sanchez and Johnson Through To Semifinals

    Nov. 5, 2010

USC flexed its singles muscle at the 2010 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, with Trojans Steve Johnson and Maria Sanchez both powering their ways through to the semifinals after grabbing a pair of wins apiece today at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Both seeded No. 7 in their respective brackets, Johnson and Sanchez each topped some tough opponents today in the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals.

On paper, Maria Sanchez had a tough draw to get through today, but the Trojan senior managed straight-set victories in both matches, including a smooth 6-2, 6-2 upset of No. 4 seeded Denise Muresan of Michigan in the quarterfinals. Sanchez had dished out a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Clemson's Josipa Bek in the Round of 16 before coming against No. 4 seed Muresan later in the day. Sanchez's solid work today puts the Trojan up against No. 6 seeded Allie Will of Florida in tomorrow's women's semifinals.

For defending National Indoor champion Steve Johnson is a known threat on the courts. He followed up yesterday's quick Round of 32 win with an even more decisive Round of 16 win this morning, beating Enej Bonin of Denver 6-1, 6-0 to move into the afternoon's quarterfinals. There, Johnson clashed with an upset-minded Austen Childs of Louisville. Childs came into the quarters after serving up an upset of the No. 3 seeded player in the men's bracket. Johnson was up to the task, shrugging off a tight first-set loss in a tiebreak to claim the nest two sets with relative authority. Johnson's 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-4 win over Childs sets up the Trojan for a semifinal matchup tomorrow against Blaz Rola of Ohio State, who took down the No. 2 seed during the first round of action.

On the doubles courts, USC's women's pairing of Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos came up against No. 3 seeded Baylor duo Bek/Wong. The unseeded Trojan team -- who had qualified for the National Indoors as the Southwest Regional doubles champs -- took the No. 3 seeds down to the wire. Pulido/Ramos stretched the match into a tiebreaker in today's quarterfinal, but were edged out in the tiebreak to take a tight 9-8 (2) loss that ends the Trojans' impressive winning run among the nation's best.
