Women of Troy Wind Up For First Action Of 2013-14|
Sept. 26, 2013
The USC women's tennis team has plans to divide and conquer in this coming week, with the Women of Troy lined up for season-opening action at the Cal Nike Invitational as well as the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships. For USC's doubles dynamos Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria, the trip to the All-American action offers up the opportunity to defend one of the three national doubles titles the pair won last season. Winners of the ITA/Riviera All-American, ITA National Indoor and NCAA doubles championships in 2012-13, Christian and Santamaria combine forces once again for this first test of the new season.
Ranked No. 1 in the land, Christian and Santamaria will kick off ITA/Riviera All-American action in the main draw, which runs Oct. 3-6. Santamaria also stands as the nation's No. 1 singles player as she opens up her junior season. She's locked in with a spot in the ITA/Riviera All-American singles main draw, with teammates No. 19 Brynn Boren and No. 17 Zoë Scandalis listed as alternates for the main draw. Scandalis reached the 2012 ITA/Riviera All-American singles semifinals last year as a sophomore. Boren is also paired up with freshman Zoë Katz for doubles competition, also on the list as an alternate for the doubles main draw.
Boren and Scandalis have a place in the qualifying singles draw, which runs Oct. 1-2. Teammate Gabriella DeSimone, ranked No. 56 in the nation in singles, also will compete in singles qualifying. In the doubles draw, Boren and Katz will play in qualifying if they don't end up netting a place as alternates in the main draw.
Qualifying and main draw rounds will all take place at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Prequalifying competition is set for UCLA's Los Angeles Tennis Center, running Sept. 28-29. The Trojans have No. 86 Kaitlyn Christian and No. 91 Giuliana Olmos in the mix there for singles, working toward moving through prequalifying to score a place in Pacific Palisades. Olmos will also compete in the prequalifying doubles draw with partner Scandalis.
Meanwhile, several Women of Troy will also be getting the 2013-14 season rolling with a trip to Berkeley, Calif., for action at the Cal Nike Invitational from Sept. 27-29. Draws for the competition have not yet been posted, but USC plans to send No. 19 Brynn Boren, No. 56 Gabriella DeSimone, Ellie Yates and Zoë Katz up north to compete before some are called to duty at the ITA/Riviera All-American.
