    Edwards, Olmos and Smith Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

    LOS ANGELES – Water polo junior Blake Edwards and tennis doubles pair Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 14-20, on Monday, Sept. 21.

    USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    Blake Edwards led the Trojans to a third-place finish against top-tier competition at the Kap7 NorCal Invitational. After USC rolled through group play with wins over Redlands and #8 UC Irvine, Edwards and the Trojans claimed a spot in the semifinals against #4 Stanford.

    Against the Cardinal, Edwards put on a showcase with hat trick in a dramatic 6-5 loss. The junior was resilient, providing late-game heroics in the fourth quarter with an equalizer followed by another goal after Stanford reclaimed the lead to pull to Trojans to within one score with 2:12 remaining. In a battle for third place against #3 California, Edwards tallied two goals in the 12-9 victory over the Bears. Up next, USC heads home to take on Long Beach State at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Saturday (Sept. 26) at 7:00 p.m. PT.

    Also nominated for men’s student-athlete of the week: JuJu Smith-Schuster (football) and Jake DeVine (tennis).

    USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    The senior-sophomore doubles pair of Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith dominated the field of play at the 2015 Oracle/ITA Masters on their way to the doubles crown. The wildcard duo began the tournament in a quarterfinal match against Gavrilovska/Pierson of Texas A&M and breezed by with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

    In the semifinals, Olmos and Smith took command against the draw’s No. 2 seeded duo of #4 Campbell/Cotton (Vanderbilt) with a 6-2, 6-3 win to reserve a spot in the championship match. In the finals, Olmos and Smith conquered their quest for the crown against another top-10 doubles pair with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory over #9 Adachi/Sutjiadi (Kentucky). Up next, the Women of Troy look to compete in the ITF Pro Circuit in Las Vegas, Nev. Starting on Saturday (Sept. 26).

    Also nominated for women’s student-athlete of the week: Samantha Bricio (volleyball) and Morgan Andrews (soccer).

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Alec Koondel. Student assistant voters include, Andrew McKagan, Tera Novy, Carlene Jones, Kiia Brantley, Dru Chavez, Rachel Dobrin, Meagan Manahan and Brett Warner.
