June 20, 2011
The USC women's tennis team has rounded out the 2011 season by adding a handful of extra awards to its honor roll for the year. Senior Honda Award finalist and Pac-10 Player of the Year Maria Sanchez has another set of All-America honors to her name to go along with selection as the ITA National Senior Player of the Year. Freshman Kaitlyn Christian also has All-America honors, and wraps up her first season at Troy as the ITA Southwest Region Player to Watch.
Final rankings also have been released by the ITA, with Christian and Sanchez on the list along with three more Women of Troy. Sophomore Danielle Lao finishes up her second year as the No. 23 ranked singles player in the nation. Sanchez closes out her USC career at No. 3 in the land, and Christian ranks No. 90 in singles. In doubles, Christian/Sanchez rank No. 5 in the last rankings of the year, with teammates Valeria Pulido and Alison Ramos combining forces to round out the season at No. 28 in the nation.
The ITA All-America honor roll has Maria Sanchez set up with her second singles All-America selection and the first doubles All-America status of her career. Kaitlyn Christian joined Sanchez to lock in on doubles All-America honors this season, as the pair became the first-ever Women of Troy team to reach the NCAA Doubles semifinals. The powerful Trojan tandem finished the year with a dominating 30-5 overall record together. It's fitting that the two Trojans also captured high honors from the ITA as well. Sanchez' impressive senior resume not only caught the attention of the Honda Award committee in selecting her a finalist for the award, her standout final season at Troy has put her on the map as the 2011 ITA Senior Player of the Year. Christian, meanwhile, turned so many heads as to garner selection from the ITA Southwest Region as its Player to Watch.
