Christian, Sanchez and Johnson Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes Of The Week|
May 31, 2011
Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez of the women's tennis team and Steve Johnson of the men's tennis team were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week today (May 31) for the week of May 22-30.
Steve Johnson : Men's Tennis : Less than a week after helping the Trojans win their third straight -- and 19th overall -- NCAA Team Championship, USC junior Steve Johnson claimed his 35th straight singles win and clinched the 2011 NCAA Singles crown in beating Tennessee's Rhyne Williams 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Johnson becomes the first Trojan ever to win both the NCAA team championship and singles title in the same year since the dual-match format was used to determine national team champions. Johnson becomes the 12th Trojan to win an NCAA singles crown. This year Johnson claimed both the Pac-10 Singles and Doubles titles, followed by Pac-10 Player of the Year honors. He then picked up the NCAA Team Tournament's Most Outstanding Player award before the start of NCAA Singles play.
Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez : Women's Tennis: USC's potent pair of freshman-senior talent made history with today's appearance in the NCAA Doubles Semifinals in becoming the first Women of Troy team to roll that deep in the tournament. Kaitlyn Christian and Maria Sanchez were one of three Pac-10 pairs to reach the semifinal round, but the Trojans were up against a couple of Clemson players for their semi showdown. Christian/Sanchez became the first Women of Troy ever to reach the NCAA women's doubles semifinals. Clemson found a late advantage and would wind up with the win, taking a 6-4, 6-4 victory to put Bek/Wong in the title match.
That wraps up a 2011 campaign that saw Christian/Sanchez post a 30-5 overall record together in doubles play. The ITA Southwest Regional champions, Christian and Sanchez would go on to earn the No. 3 seed in this year's NCAA Doubles Championships. Freshman Christian earned honors as the ITA Southwest Region Player to Watch, and senior Sanchez hauled in the ITA National Senior Player of the Year award to go along with her honor as the Pac-10 Player of the Year.
