    Jewel Peterson Advances In Singles, Not Doubles

    STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Sophomore Jewel Peterson advanced with a three-set victory in first round action of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships on Tuesday, May 22, at the Lincoln Tennis Center. The individual competition began a day late after rain prolonged the team championship.

    A 9-16 seed, Peterson defeated Dee Dee Herring of SMU 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the second round. Peterson will face Coleen Cheng of Northwestern in the next round on Wednesday. The pair already faced each other in the Round of 16 of the team championship. Peterson defeated Cheng 6-2, 6-3.

    USC did not find the same success in the doubles tournament. Peterson and Tiffany Brymer were eliminated in the first round with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik of Wake Forest.

    Maureen Diaz, who was selected as an alternate for the singles championship, did not get placed in the draw.
