April 23, 2013
USC junior Kaitlyn Christian had a strong outing in doubles and singles to help USC finish off rival UCLA last week and complete a perfect, undefeated Pac-12 season. For her winning efforts, Christian has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week. Her award makes Christian the seventh Trojan to earn the weekly honor from the conference this season, as the Women of Troy have hauled in the award nine times out of the 14 weeks it has been awarded this year.
Against the Bruins last week, Christian teamed up with Sabrina Santamaria and secured the doubles point for the Trojans with an 8-3 win over UCLA's Montez/Morton on court one. In singles, Christian rebounded from a loss in the first set and rallied to beat her ranked Bruin opponent, #90 Kaitlin Ray, with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 comeback effort in USC's 6-1 win over UCLA. In beating the Bruins this week, USC has notched its first back-to-back wins over rival UCLA since 2006, improving to 21-2 overall with a 10-0 finish in Pac-12 play.
The doubles victory kept Christian undefeated with Santamaria at 26-0 this season, and the singles win was Christian's eight straight as she improved to 21-6 overall with a perfect 8-0 mark in Pac-12 matches.
The Women of Troy now turn to individual action this week at the2013 Pac-12 Championships in Ojai, Calif., where Christian and Santamaria will aim to defend their 2012 doubles title.
