Anca Anastasiu Named Pac-10 Tennis Player Of The Week

    April 10, 2006

Junior Anca Anastasiu earned her first career Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week award after two more big wins over the weekend. Anastasiu has racked up an undefeated record in USC's dual match singles action, having ballooned that record to 15-0 with wins at No. 1 Stanford and No. 13 California from her No. 5 singles position.

Anastasiu was USC's only singles victory against the undefeated Cardinal with her hard-fought 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 win over Stanford's #41-ranked Whitney Deason. The following day, she came back from a 5-7, 0-2 deficit in her rain-delayed match with Cal's Claire Ilcinkas. Anastasiu powered back to win six straight games to claim the second set on the way to her 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory that put her dual match record at 15-0. She is 6-0 in Pac-10 singles play and 20-6 overall on the season.

Anastasiu is the third USC player to be named a 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Week, joining senior Luana Magnani and sophomore Lindsey Nelson as honorees this season.
